Closing Time

Hey guys! I wanted to let you know some news I recently heard... Piperlime and Wet Seal are closing! Well, Wet Seal is closing the majority of their stores and filed for bankruptcy, so it sounds to me like the end for the company is in sight.

Piperlime, Gap's trendy online boutique that was created to compete with Zappos, will be closing at the end of February. Gap announced that they are closing their Piperlime doors to focus more on their Old Navy, Banana Republic and Gap brands.

If you haven't heard of Piperlime- they carry high end brands like Kate Spade, BCBG, 7 For All Mankind, Shoshanna, etc... its basically like a Nordstom, but they are known for having great sales. So, since this company is closing extremely soon, I suggest that you troll their site for the next month for their going-out-of-business sales!!! I know I be browsing their site all February for sure!

Wet Seal unexpectedly closed hundreds of their stores across America and will only be keeping their west-coast locations open. I have always liked Wet Seal (even though its a store for teens haha), but didn't shop there much in the last couple years because I would have to drive all the way out to Cool Springs mall to go there.

I have no idea if that Wet Seal is still open, but if there is a store still open near you, I would suggest going because there are probably some major going-out-of-business sales there too.

Many Wet Seal employees were shocked when they were given the news that their store was closing without any warning. They were very irate that they were suddenly out of a job, and many are encouraging a boycott of the store. Look at these signs in the store windows across Wet Seals in the USA:

Yikes! Not good publicity for Wet Seal

Anyways, RIP, Wet Seal and Piperlime!!!! I will be shopping your sales until you're gone for good.....

The Verdict

I listened to the closing arguments in the 12-day Vanderbilt Rape Trial yesterday and then went about my day thinking there wouldn't be a decision until much later in the week. Much to my surprise, the jury reached an agreement in only three hours! The Defendants, Vanderberg and Batey were convicted of almost all charges.

Vanderberg was convicted of four counts of aggravated rape, one count of attempted aggravated rape, two counts of aggravated battery, tampering with evidence and unlawful photography.

Batey was also convicted of four counts of aggravated rape, one count of attempted aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated battery.

I am so happy with the jury's decision and I truly think they were given what they deserved for their despicable acts.  I had a feeling that our judicial system would make an example of them. Their prison sentences will be announced in March.

The Vanderbilt football players charged in this case

I am glad that I was able to watch so much of this trial and the testimonies because this was one of the craziest crime stories that I've ever heard of. It also was extra disturbing to me because I live in Nashville and have been to the bars, apartments and college campus involved in this story.

The victim showed extreme bravery in getting up in front of live television and testifying her story on the witness stand. Her bravery and strength probably had a major impact of the jury's decisions.

The victim wrote a statement to the media that was read by the State's attorneys yesterday. She wrote,

"Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this difficult process. I am thankful that the criminal justice system will hold the defendants responsible for their violent crimes. I am also hopeful that the publicity this case has received will lead to a discussion of how we can end sexual violence on college campuses. Finally, I want to remind other victims of sexual violence: you are not alone. You are not to blame."

Although the defense attorneys tried to use culture and alcohol consumption as an excuse for their clients' violent behavior, it wasn't convincing to the jury.

Hopefully young people can look at this story as a cautionary tale. If this can happen on a campus as prestigious as Vanderbilt, it can happen anywhere. Women should watch their drinks (for GHB, etc.) and how much they drink, because the Victim couldn't even trust the person she was dating (Vanderberg) in her time of need.

Young men can look at this story and see that there are consequences for their actions- it looks like these two 21-year-old defendants will be serving around 20 years in prison.

It is also a lesson on surrounding yourself with good people- Vanderberg got his 2 best friends in California charged with felonies (tampering with evidence). His roommate had to testify on the witness stand (on national television) just because he shared a room with him. I bet they REALLY wish they had never befriended or even encountered Vanderberg now.

The friends and Vanderbilt athletes charged in this case

Also, we should all learn from this how important it is to take care of each other and to look out for each other. I would feel horrible to be the victim's roommate and friends who left her at the bar that night. She did not deserve what happened to her and this could have happened to anyone who decided to drink at the Tin Roof or the Vanderbilt Campus that evening.

Readers, what did you think of this case and the jury's verdict? Let me know your thoughts!

Back in August I wrote a post about one of my favorite websites, One Kings Lane! Recently I got an email from them about one of their lines called Belle Meade Furnishings. Funny coincidence because Belle Meade is where I grew up on Nashville!!

The line is very fancy and elegant furniture, and One King's Lane has it all on sale. Most of it is pretty pricey but is is fun to browse through and daydream!!!

Confessional Friday

Happy FRIDAY! Today I am linking up with Blonde Ambition Blog and other bloggers for Confessional Friday!

So here we go..... ***cue the Confessions Song by Usher***

I confess the main TV I've been watching this week is Bravo, Bravo, Bravo... Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Vanderpump Rules.. Millionaire Matchmaker.. I'm hooked!

Such great seasons this time and I love how Patty Stanger on Millionaire Matchmaker has been setting up famous people this year.. especially Perez Hilton, Stephanie Pratt (from The Hills), etc.. its pretty funny to see who they pick for their awkward blind dates!

I also really like the new ladies on Real Housewives of BH: Lisa Rinna and Eileen Davidson. They are such classy, funny ladies and this show really needed some class to balance out Brandy Glanville's crude and gross comments! Brandy was funny at first but I've gotten so tired (and disgusted) of her!

I confess that I have one week left of Dry January (I figured 30 days was enough) and I cannot (I repeat- cannot) wait to have a glass of wine! Seriously. I didn't factor in that it is cold in January and you can't do many outdoor activities. I am not a homebody and can't wait to get out and socialize because this month has lasted much longer than I expected!! I have been counting down the days every day but I know I can do this!!!

I confess that it is still three weeks away, but I've already been planning for Valentines Day! I've been having fun looking at creative Valentines ideas on Pinterest

I confess that hopefully this weekend I get to see American Sniper! Although I will probably cry in the theater I am still dying to see it, especially since it was recently nominated for a Best Picture Oscar! I also love Sienna Miller and I'm happy to see her in a big-name film because she has disappeared since I saw her in Factory Girl!

I confess that we have another meeting about trials today and although we get free lunch, I am really not looking forward to it. For some reason, meetings are one of the most draining things for me at work. Fridays and Mondays always seem to be the busiest days at a law firm and those are always the days I am the least on my A-game haha!

I confess that from two Junior League meetings this week, listening/watching so much of the live footage from the Vanderbilt Rape Trial and sooo much trial preparation at work I am very burned out and sooooo ready for the weekend! TGIF!!!

Readers, do you have any confessions for Confessional Friday? Let me know if you do! Thanks for reading!

Life's Too Short...

Well this week has been way wayyyyy too busy with work and everything else! However I have still been near my computer so I can watch/ listen to the live footage of the Vanderbilt Rape Trial.

Most of the time I really can't believe what I am hearing. I feel like I am watching a bomb be dropped every 5 minutes! I am an ID channel addict and have worked in the legal field for almost 5 years, and I have never seen a case as crazy as this. I feel terrible for the victim and I really hope Vanderburg is locked up forever because he is obviously a very veryyyyyy sick individual who doesn't belong in society.

Its pretty hard to defend a crime when the act has been videotaped and photographed, emailed out to multiple friends and there were 6 people in the room, so its interesting to watch the defense counsel try every strategy they can to defend their clients.

I watched his college roommate (who pretended to sleep through the entire incident) testify on the stand yesterday, and he was asked if he was friends with Vanderburg when they were roomies.. he said "not really.." I can see why... I'm sure he knew his roommate was a creepy mean sicko!!! I wouldn't want to hang out with him either (Vanderburg's text conversations to his friend in California before the incident...... really????)!

It is also crazy that this trial is going on next door to our office every day! Every time I'm on my lunch break I am looking around to see if I can spot any of the lawyers or witnesses from the  trial. The trial is expected to last 2 weeks. You can watch the live footage of the trial on the Nashville News Channel 4 website here

Has anyone been watching the footage of this ridiculous trial? If you have any comments please comment below! Anyways.. hope everyone is having a great week! I just wanted to leave you all with this meme that I saw recently:

Happy MLK Day! I guess a lot of you have today off for the holiday, but I am not so lucky. I don't really care that much though because I've never had MLK day off from any jobs that I've had, and I have so much work to do here at the law firm that I don't really care that much.

These days my nail polish collection has been feeling a little blah. I think I need to expand my color selection a little bit because I have sooo many shades of red or pink. On my lunch break today I stopped into Walgreens and picked up these three colors:

From left to right, these are their color names and what they look like on your nails
(images via Pinterest):

Essie: Angora Cardi

 Sally Hansen: Pink Pong

 Essie: Bobbing for Baubles

These are all kind of in-between colors, inspired by my wacky January in-between mood. Lately I'm still trying to get back in the swing of things at work after having so much time off for the holidays! Dry January has also left me with lots of free time (to paint my nails, clean my condo, run errands, watch movies, etc.) since I've been avoiding bars or any drinking activities. These colors definitely reflect my restless mood.

I can't wait to try these colors out.. what are your favorite nail colors you've found recently?

This weekend I finally saw Wild in theaters and I absolutely loved it!!! It is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time- and one of the best parts about it is that it is based on a true story. Wild is based on the best-selling memoir by Cheryl Strayed.

The real Cheryl Strayed during her hike (image credit)

Played by Reese Witherspoon, in 1995 Strayed sets out on a journey to hike the 1,100-mile  Pacific Crest Trail alone. She makes this choice because she is seeking to heal herself after a divorce, the death of her mother and years of reckless destructive behavior.

Cheryl Strayed on the Pacific Crest Trail (image credit

What is unusual about her story is that Strayed has no experience with hiking. This hike is meant for the very experienced hikers, so this journey is especially grueling and physically painful for her.

Cheryl Strayed with her giant trail backpack (image credit

I really don't want to be a spoiler or give away too much about the story- but this film is very inspiring for all people- not just women. The film is more of a drama or suspense movie than a "chick flick", so men will appreciate it too. It has gotten phenomenal reviews and award nominations- so far it has scored a 91% on rotten tomatoes

While you are watching the film, you really feel like you are experiencing the hike with her- and although a lot of the time it is just Strayed that you are watching, it isn't boring (like how it was watching Tom Hanks alone on an island in Cast Away!).

Now I am absolutely dying to read the book! Cheryl Strayed was a prize-winning author before she even published her story in Wild in 2012. Since she hiked the trail in 1995, it is very interesting to me that she waited so many years to publish the story about it!

Side note: this film contains a lot of nudity, drug use and inappropriate situations, so beware. If any of these things bother or offend you, you may want to avoid this movie or watch it once it comes out on television. Other than that, see this movie or read the book asap!

If you have already read the book or watched the film, read 7 things that didn't make it into Wild by Cheryl Strayed. You will love all these parts of her story that Strayed had to leave out of her book.

Also, watch Reese Witherspoon's interview about the film and her production company here!

Did you guys watch the film or read the book? Let me know what you thought!

Golden Globes 2015

Last night were the Golden Globes! I was hoping that some of my favorites from the last year- Wild, Gone Girl, Night Crawler, True Detective or Girls would win and I was so disappointed that none of them did! I was even more disappointed that I don't think I have seen a single movie or TV show that did win! Oh well.. I guess I need to see some of the winners (especially Boyhood, Birdman and Grand Budapest Hotel).

But on a more serious note, what really struck me last night was seeing the actors and actresses sporting the slogan "Je Suis Charlie".

Je Suis Charlie is a slogan adopted by supporters of free speech and freedom of expression after the January 7, 2015 massacre in which 12 people were killed at the offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, France. The slogan is supporting those that were killed at the Charlie Hebdo shooting and supports freedom of speech and resistance to armed threats. Many journalists embraced the expression as a rallying cry for the freedom of self-expression.

As a former journalist and current blogger, these attacks in Paris really hit home for me. It breaks my heart that these journalists and editors at the satirical weekly newspaper (which features cartoons, reports, and jokes) were murdered for their words. It is one of the most disturbing terrorist attacks that I've ever heard of. I am so grateful to live in a country that values free speech and individuality. I have been to Paris twice and it is truly one of the most amazing cities on the face of the earth. My heart goes out to the friends and family of all of the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attacks.

Cartoonists around the world reacted to the cold-blooded assassination of their colleagues the best way they knew how- with powerful drawings worth a thousand words. The drawings united cartoonists in grief and they sent forth a message- we must not, will not and should not be silenced. Here is one of the inspirational cartoons:

I may write a post with more Je Suis Charlie cartoons at a later time- they are such meaningful art! If you would like to show your support for free speech, you can order some Je Suis Charlie merchandise here! Be safe, everyone!

Bachelor Season 19!!!

Okay, one of my biggest TV guilty pleasures is The Bachelor/Bachelorette shows! I have been hooked on the shows for several years now- I love watching love stories, I love reality television, and I love competition shows.. the Bachelor/Bachelorette is a combination of them all!!

If you don't watch the Bachelor, I think you should give this season a chance because I really think this will be the best season of all.

Chris Soules is unique because he is a 33-year-old bachelor from nowheresville Iowa- so these women have to be okay with living in the middle of nowhere and living a farmer lifestyle with him! Usually the bachelor is a doctor, pilot, businessman or whatever from a big city that has an exciting life for the women to join- so these women need to really be into HIM and not just his job or background!

Bachelor Chris Soules (image via: Us Magazine)

Chris Soules seems like he is the Bachelor for the right reasons. He makes it clear that he is looking for a wife - not just to be a celebrity. I watched him on Andi's bachelorette season, and I thought he was adorable because throughout her show he was her secret admirer and kept sending her romantic notes.

Andi and Chris (Image via:  Daily Mail)

Andi kept wondering throughout the season who her secret admirer was, and it was too cute once it was revealed that it was him all along! He was really romantic. Chris made it into the final 3, but in the end, Andi, an attorney from Atlanta couldn't picture a future with him farming in Iowa, and he was heartbroken when he was sent home.

But now, Chris has 30 women to choose from (usually there are only 25!) Bachelor Chris has a really funny sense of humor and is really overwhelmed being around all these beautiful women because he hardly sees any women at all in the small town he lives in!

If you missed the first episode, you can watch it online here!!!

SPOILER ALERT: I watched the premiere episode last night. The women this season are even more beautiful (with great personalities) than past seasons. Usually there are about 15 beautiful movie-star-looking-women, and then 10 pretty women with great personalities. Not this season. This time there are 30 women (there are usually 25) so there are even more to choose from.

I thought it was funny that Chris decided to give Tara, 26, a rose even though she was completely drunk off of whiskey and acting a food during the rose ceremony. I think it shows that Chris knows how overwhelming the show is at first and he cares about giving people second chances.

I was a little annoyed that he gave Britt, 27, a waitress from LA, the first impression rose. I feel like the aspiring actress seems a little too-good-to-be-true and fake, and may be there for the wrong reasons. She doesn't seem like she would be into the farmer life. The two of them had bizarre chemistry together though, so I guess we will have to see what happens!!

Readers, what do you think about bachelor Chris's season? Do you watch the Bachelor or Bachelorette shows?
